What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a combination of plastic surgery procedures that delivers a customized body transformation in a single surgery. It combines breast enhancement and body contouring to restore your body to its best appearance, often after pregnancy or significant weight loss.

What Is Included in a Mommy Makeover?

Each surgery is tailored to address your specific concerns and create the results you have been dreaming of. Most women choose to include a combination of breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation with fat grafting or implants adds fullness to your breasts. Whether you have lost volume or projection due to breastfeeding or weight loss, there are several surgical options to achieve your desired shape and size.

Breast Lift

A breast lift rejuvenates the breasts by lifting them to a more youthful position, reshaping them to a rounder and firmer look and resizing the areolas if desired. Many women choose to combine a breast lift with breast augmentation to address both the shape and size of their breasts.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes excess abdominal skin and tightens lax skin. It can also repair stretched or separated abdominal muscles. It creates a flatter, firmer midsection and addresses bulging or “pooches” that are common after pregnancy. Based upon your exam findings, the type of tummy tuck can be decided.

Liposuction

Liposuction reduces stubborn fat deposits by suctioning out fat tissue through a thin tube called a cannula. It works well in conjunction with a tummy tuck to create attractive abdominal and flank contours. Other popular areas for liposuction include the hips, arms, legs, and back. Circumferential liposuction, sometimes known as 360 liposuction, can also be performed at the time of a tummy tuck.

In some cases, you may choose to include facial procedures or nonsurgical treatments, as well. Dr. Wright will discuss each of these options with you during your private consultation.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

The mommy makeover got its name because it offers corrections that are especially beneficial for women who have had children. However, you don’t have to be a mother to enjoy the results. You may be a candidate if you are in generally good health and looking to:

  • Lift your breasts to a more youthful shape and position.
  • Add or restore fullness to your breasts.
  • Tighten abdominal skin and muscles.
  • Reduce stubborn excess fat.

It is important to note that a mommy makeover is not a weight-loss procedure. You will be happiest with your results if you maintain a healthy lifestyle and choose to have the surgery when you are at or near a healthy and stable weight.

What to Expect the Day of Your Mommy Makeover Surgery

Before your procedure, you will meet with Dr. Wright for a pre-op appointment to review the details of your surgery, check that you are in good health, and provide any post-op garments, instructions, and prescriptions you may need.

Mommy makeovers are typically performed on an outpatient basis. You will need a trusted friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you that night. Our office is happy to help coordinate out-of-town patients to stay local or in recovery care if needed.

What Is Mommy Makeover Recovery Like?

Most people are able to return to work and daily activities within 2 weeks, though you may need a bit more time if your job is physically demanding. You will need to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks.

During the first week or so, you may experience some discomfort, tightness, swelling, and bruising. This is normal, and typically, it’s easily managed with medication.

Your recovery process will vary depending on the procedures you include in your transformation. Dr. Wright will provide you with detailed recovery instructions and clear you for activity as you heal.

Mommy Makeover FAQ

Should I wait until I’m done having kids to get a mommy makeover?

While a mommy makeover won’t affect your ability to get pregnant, many women choose to wait until their family is complete to have the surgery done. Future pregnancies may cause breast changes, abdominal skin stretching, and weight fluctuations that may compromise your long-term results. Waiting until you are finished having babies is the best way to enjoy your new look for as long as possible.

Is it safe to combine plastic surgery procedures?

When you are working with a board-certified plastic surgeon, yes, it is safe to combine procedures. This approach means you will only have to be put under anesthesia once, and your recovery process will be quicker overall than it would be with separate procedures.

Are mommy makeovers covered by insurance?

Because mommy makeovers are considered elective cosmetic procedures, they are not typically covered by insurance. However, financing plans are available to make your surgery more affordable.

Do you have to lose weight before having a mommy makeover?

For optimal safety and results, you should be at a healthy, maintainable weight before cosmetic surgery.

What happens if I get pregnant after a mommy makeover?

Pregnancy is not recommended after a mommy makeover because the improvements from surgery will likely be compromised.

Is mommy makeover surgery worth it?

Dr. Wright’s patients are consistently happy with their mommy makeover results. These personalized procedures renew our patients’ appearance and their confidence.
