SkinPen® Microneedling

Microneedling is one of the most effective and popular skin rejuvenation treatments, especially for patients who want to reduce acne scarring, smooth fine lines, and tighten loose neck skin. We use SkinPen microneedling at our Little Rock, AR, practice for women and men from Conway, Pine Bluff, Hot Springs, and other nearby towns. It was the first microneedling device cleared by the FDA and one of the few such devices that can be used to treat patients of all skin types.

How does SkinPen microneedling work?

The handheld SkinPen device is tipped with an array of tiny needles that rapidly puncture the skin, creating micro-channels. These wounds trigger the body’s healing process, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. These proteins are essential building blocks of smooth, more youthful-looking skin.

What skin concerns does microneedling address?

The minimally invasive SkinPen procedure can treat a range of issues for patients of all skin tones and types. These issues are often identified by our advanced VISIA® Complexion Analysis system. Our providers customize treatments by adjusting the size of the needles and the penetration depth. Patients can choose SkinPen microneedling to treat:

  • Acne scars
  • Melasma
  • Neck wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Stretch marks

Patients with active acne or who are taking certain acne medications should not get SkinPen microneedling treatment.  Men and women who want to improve deeper wrinkles or skin laxity may achieve better results with Ellacor® treatments for firmer skin with minimal downtime. You can also consider getting Genius® RF microneedling, which combines radiofrequency energy with microneedling.

What happens during a SkinPen microneedling treatment?

A SkinPen treatment begins with cleansing the patient’s face and then applying a topical numbing cream. Once the treatment area is numb, the provider moves the device across the skin. Patients remain comfortable as the needles puncture the skin. A calming serum applied after the procedure helps minimize redness. A patient’s skin will appear as if it’s sunburned, but much of the redness and tenderness should resolve after 24 hours.

How many treatments are needed?

We recommend that patients schedule at least 3 microneedling appointments, each spaced 30 days apart. Depending on the condition being treated, a patient may see results within a week of the initial treatment. It takes longer to see optimal results for acne scars, stretch marks, and other deeply rooted concerns.

We recommend scheduling your treatments at least 3 weeks before a special event to see optimal results.

Once you’ve completed the series of treatments, maintenance procedures can help keep the skin looking smooth and youthful. We recommend scheduling a SkinPen treatment every 4 to 6 months.
